Summary:

This case explains the challenges faced by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (Goodyear) in converting the tacit knowledge of employees to explicit knowledge. Knowledge management specialists at Goodyear noticed that many employees were either leaving or retiring from the company, and taking with them the knowledge they created during their tenure in the organization. Goodyear realized it was vital to store this knowledge so that future engineers would not have to regenerate the existing knowledge from scratch. However, Goodyear also realized that, whereas accessing tacit knowledge was the challenge, encouraging employees, especially engineers, to utilize the existing knowledge in databases and publications was equally tricky. Moreover, Goodyear also needed to ascertain what return on investment it was generating through its knowledge management system. How can Goodyear measure the effectiveness of its knowledge management system? How can it further improve its knowledge management system? The case encourages students to explore knowledge management strategies, specifically ways to evaluate the effectiveness of such strategies.
