Summary:
The case explains Twitter, Inc's (Twitter and rebranded as "X" in 2023) challenges with fake news, fake accounts, and deep fakes on its social media platform. Although Twitter took action to eliminate fake accounts and deplatformed social media celebrities spreading fake news, fans of these celebrities protested. Despite these issues, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, acquired Twitter in October 2022. Earlier in the year, when Musk discovered that issues around fake accounts were a much greater problem than claimed by Twitter, he tried to call off the deal before going through with it. On taking over ownership, Musk took steps to try to address the problems. Organizations in other countries, such as the European Union, were also working toward implementing strict social media policies related to the operation of fake news and fake accounts and imposed heavy penalties on social media companies that did not abide by them. What should Twitter do to deal with the crisis of fake news, fake accounts, and deepfakes on its social media platform? Does merely imposing a penalty or deplatforming help? This case encourages students to explore management strategies that social media companies adopt to address fake news, fake accounts, and associated issues.
