- Summary:
- Facebook and other social media companies have received negative media attention in recent years. This attention reached its height when Frances Haugen, a former Facebook employee and whistleblower, testified before members of the United States Senate in October, 2021. During her remarks, she raised concerns about a number of alleged ethical problems at the company, including its contribution to political polarization, its lax enforcement of community standards, and its contributions to the decline in adolescent mental health. In this case study, students will apply various ethical decision-making frameworks to examine whether for-profit companies, such as Facebook, have responsibilities to the public interest. They will also consider how whistleblowers should balance their duties to their employers and to society at large.
