Summary:
Each generation develops a distinctive set of values that its members acquire through shared experience. These values include work ethic, or one's belief in the importance of work. As a result, age significantly shapes expectations and behaviors within the workplace. The entry of Generation Z into the current job market is creating a profound change in how the work-life balance is understood. A phenomenon called quiet quitting is taking hold whereby young workers are refusing to perform any work-related duties after hours, including answering text messages or emails. Such conduct does not typically occur with older workers, and businesses are beginning to worry about a slowdown in productivity. This case study examines how an employer addresses quiet quitting by a Generation Z employee without resorting to threats or allowing special concessions. Students will be asked to reconcile an employee's concern about maintaining a healthy work-life balance against an employer's concern about achieving a reasonable level of productivity.
