Summary:
In 2015, Mrityunjay Sharma initiated his first entrepreneurial venture named ESTINNO Private Limited. Sharma, with his two friends, invented and patented an electronic product named Vortex, which was India's smallest washing machine. ESTINNO was one of the first indigenous electronic goods manufacturing units set up in Rourkela city (Odisha state, eastern coastal India). It was incubated in a university technology business incubation facility (UTBI) and has operated from the same place since then. The UTBI was a government-funded facility provided to support young entrepreneurs with innovative ideas like ESTINNO. In 2020, due to the severe socio-economic after-effects of the pandemic, UTBI introduced new terms and conditions to the incubation contract. To their utter surprise, in lieu of recovering due payment from Sharma, UTBI withheld ESTINNO's inventory without any prior notice. Sharma was devastated by the new contract conditions, early exit of business partners and financial losses during 2020/2021. Sharma was finding it difficult to continue to pursue his passion, given that on one side, environmental conditions were unfavorable and on the other, the UTBI's terms and conditions forced him to rethink ESTINNO's business model. In the surge of current challenges, what strategies must Sharma adopt to optimally use existing resources, exploit alternatives to enhance financial strength, and survive? Students will be asked to analyze the current state of the startup ecosystem and propose strategic choices for an early-stage startup to survive under uncertainties.
