- Summary:
- This case study is about Food Fan's Club, which opened its door in in 2022 in a corner of a residential area of Banasree, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The restaurant owners had hoped for strong sales. They tried to entice customers by offering free drinking water, tomato ketchup, unlimited disposable hand towels, tea, and toothpicks to make the Food Fan's Club different from other fast-food restaurants in the market, which offer few free amenities. However, the restaurant came under pressure because customers exploited the free amenities, taking them home or producing unnecessary waste. As a result, monthly costs were significantly greater than anticipated. However, in managing this aspect of consumer behavior, the restaurant owners faced several challenges, including the busy nature of Dhaka restaurants, the competitiveness of the industry, and the expectations of customers in the city. Students will be asked to evaluate the current competitive environment of the Food Fan's Club within the context of this real-life business challenge. Students will play the business consultant role to identify and apply the most appropriate and propitious strategies to manage customers' behavior in relation to the use of free amenities in a way that retains customer satisfaction and business competitiveness while managing costs and reducing waste. Although the case was developed using information from a specific small restaurant, the outcomes of the case can be applied to other similar restaurants in Bangladesh and worldwide.
