Summary:
This case describes a dilemma faced by Professor Maria Lopez, who is the president of the faculty union at Majestic Private University. The faculty union is about to enter contract negotiations with the Majestic Private University Administration. As president of the union, Maria Lopez is responsible for assembling the faculty team that will negotiate the Collective Bargaining Agreement for the faculty. Maria has just become aware of a possible affair between a trusted and dedicated union team member (Professor Henry Murphy) and the vice president's secretary (Jackie Martin). Dean George Taylor warns Maria Lopez to not put Henry Murphy on the negotiating team, because Henry might share the union strategy with Jackie Martin, who could then pass it on to her boss, the vice president, who is on the opposing side. If the vice president knows in advance the minimum that the union would be willing to accept in terms of pay raise and benefits, it would give the administration a significant advantage in negotiating the collective bargaining contract. Maria Lopez must decide whether to include Henry Murphy on the union negotiating team. Students will be asked to identify the options available to the union president and the option they would recommend. Students will also be asked to analyze the implications of their decision.
