- Summary:
- Lakewood village introduces students to a novel use of statistical analyses as a tool for capital budgeting decisions. Using the setting of a municipality offers a unique perspective on business decision-making compared to corporate entities. Specifically, Lakewood Village is considering replacing an existing asset-water meters of residential properties from the first stage of the municipality's development. Costs of the project are relatively easy to estimate, however, incremental revenues associated with this type of asset replacement are difficult to quantify. Regression techniques are described and introduced as a method for estimating the incremental revenues of the asset replacement project. Instructors can customize the case problem set to include a comprehensive combination of analyses centered around the decision of whether to replace the water meters. This approach communicates the rigorous and thorough process that business entities undertake to make decisions in the real world.
