Summary:
This case focuses on Jack's Abby, the second-largest craft brewery in Massachusetts, United States. Founded in 2011 as a family-owned business by three brothers, by 2023 the brewery had tripled its size to become the second-largest craft brewery in Massachusetts, producing about 80,000 barrels of beer annually. Their facility in Framingham, Massachusetts, included both a taproom and a kitchen, and was a popular location for community events and family gatherings over beer, pizza, and appetizers. Even though Jack's Abby had been very successful in building a strong and well-known brand in Massachusetts and New England, challenges remained. Competition from new craft breweries was growing each year. The cost to operate a craft brewery had drastically increased with rates for electricity, water, and raw materials climbing by double digits between 2021 and 2023. At the same time, climate change was advancing at an unprecedented rate, increasing the urgency for companies, governments, and individuals to act. As it evaluates its business strategy, CEO and co-founder Sam Hendler faces a dilemma: how can he improve efficiency and reduce operational costs while also reducing environmental impacts and Jack's Abby's beer carbon footprint. The overall goals of the case are to introduce students to the business and environmental benefits of pollution prevention, and to help them understand the carbon footprint of a product and the tradeoffs that businesses face when aiming to reduce their climate impacts over the entire value chain.
