- Summary:
- The case concerns actions taken in 2022 by Kora, a sustainability app company, which, in contrast to other companies, focused on carbon offsetting programs. Kora's programs intend to drive more sustainable behavior among consumers. Consumers were unaware of how their activities contributed to greenhouse gas emissions. With the Kora app, consumers not only gauged their carbon footprint but received rewards from the company for reducing their carbon footprint. Consumer goods companies such as Nike allied with Kora. Based on the level of carbon footprint reduced as measured by the Kora app, consumers received discounts from these consumer goods companies. Other segments of consumer-focused sustainability companies reduced consumer carbon footprint through carbon offsetting programs. However, such programs were challenging because of the need for specific standard measures of carbon emissions. Kora was also still determining if sustainability incentives would drive consumers to sustainable behavior. Can Kora be successful in its sustainability mission? Can its reward incentives drive consumers toward sustainable behavior? The case encourages students to explore the drivers of sustainable consumer behavior. It also helps students examine challenges with carbon offsetting programs.
