- Summary:
- The spouses of active-duty military members can face obstacles and challenges to gaining meaningful employment. Although military spouses have relevant job experience and ample education, they are often overlooked during the hiring process due to certain aspects of their resume such as frequent long-distance relocations and gaps in employment history. This case study follows a recently relocated military spouse, a recruiter, and a hiring manager as the military spouse tries to obtain employment in a new town. Although military spouse status is not a visible or typical component of diversity, it is a concealable aspect of identity that requires management by a job candidate during an interview. Seasoned recruiters and hiring personnel can often detect a military spouse based on what appears on or is lacking from a resume.
