- Summary:
- Rapid urbanization is typically associated with strong economic development in emerging economies. In the Philippines, the availability of jobs in major urban centers and metropolitan areas tends to attract migration from rural and regional areas. However, while there may be employment opportunities, the nature of available jobs may not always be what jobseekers desire or expect. While urbanization may be associated with employment and business growth, megacities and densely populated metropolitan centers also tend to have significant environmental, health, and social issues. These problems arise because the development of urban infrastructure usually lags behind the rate of urban migration, resulting in problems with transport, housing, and sanitation. This case explores the complex issues faced by low-income urban migrants in Metro Manila, highlighting the challenges they face when navigating city life. More broadly, it challenges students to reflect on the assumptions that underpin development policy and to critically consider the complexities of sustainable economic development.
