Summary:
With commercial vehicles responsible for a third of transportation carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, electrification of commercial vehicles can play a significant role in slowing down climate change. Volta Trucks, founded in 2019 with registered offices in Stockholm, Sweden, and London, United Kingdom, is a green start-up company that manufactures and provides services for zero-tailpipe emission electric delivery trucks. Now, on the streets of Paris, London, and Los Angeles, Volta Trucks is driving fast towards the launch of a comprehensive range of fully electric commercial vehicles. Its current aim is to accelerate and sell 27,000 e-trucks by 2025-five times the number of vehicles originally projected-with its "city-specific strategy" that focuses on Europe first, followed by cities in the United States and Asia. The Volta board will have to make strategic decisions and think carefully about where to focus attention and resources to continue to create, capture, and deliver value. They will need principles to guide them through critical trade-offs and decisions, and-to make a dent in global warming-strategic practices to accelerate growth at the same time as they accelerate towards net-zero targets. This case provides students with decision-making principles and strategic tools that will enable them to design a model for the way boards can take proactive strategic initiatives to build purpose-driven green businesses at scale for sustainable urban transportation.
