- Summary:
- This case is about professional carrying cases-workbags, attachés, messenger bags, briefcases, satchels, and even backpacks. The history of carrying cases, for both men and women, is introduced. The theme of the case, however, is the connection between one's chosen carrying case and how one chooses to manage their career/life as symbolized by what is transported in the carrying case every day at work. From this perspective, a story is told about a retired professor, his satchel, and the contents of his satchel for almost 40 years. When he first received the satchel, his appreciation was directed toward its cosmetic attributes. It was only at retirement, when the satchel was empty, that he realized there was a greater utility to the carrying case. Its contents metaphorically reflected and shaped both his career and life. The same metaphor is useful to students and employees in gauging the extent to which experiences have reflected or shaped career-paths. The accounting by those items-markers-metaphorically constitutes the real-life business of what you carry.
