- Summary:
- Africa's full agricultural potential remains untapped. iProcure, a Nairobi-based green technology start-up company, is developing the largest agricultural supply chain platform in rural Africa. By connecting small farmers with agro-dealers who supply agricultural inputs, such as seeds, fertilizers, agrochemicals, and animal feed, the start-up has been successful. However, the new CEO sees the possibility to grow the business significantly while at the same time accelerating the transformation of the African agri-food systems, which would transform the start-up to a green unicorn company. To make this pivot in their business strategy, iProcure would need a technology-based business model while carefully considering how to enable and sustainably build the business. This case encourages students to explore the challenges of growing a business at scale, and the opportunity side of digital transformation for start-up companies, using green technology intended to mitigate or reverse the effects of human activity on the environment. The case provides students with technology-based business models and strategic building blocks, enabling them to create and design a model for how company boards can take proactive strategic initiatives to build green businesses at scale, with the power to accelerate the transformation of African agri-food systems.
