Summary:
Solina Cosmetics, a lipstick manufacturer in the city of Katowice, Poland, has been manufacturing high-quality lipstick since 1993. The founders of the company, Janusz Tymkiewicz and his wife Ewa, were both professors of chemistry at the University of Katowice. After the fall of communism, they saw how expensive Western brand cosmetics were and decided to create a new high-quality lipstick for the Polish market. Their original idea was an instant success, and their company quickly grew. However, Janusz and his wife only spoke Polish and Russian. Although the company grew to over 200 employees by the year 2015, the founders were still active executives in the company but only comfortable dealing with Eastern European distributors who could speak their languages. At the same time, their 29-year-old daughter, Katarzyna, completed an MBA degree at Columbia University in the United States, and then spent several years working as a marketing director for the company. Her parents are increasingly hoping that she will take over the business one day, and she is more than eager to do so. However, a sudden and real global challenge-the war in Ukraine-has upended their business model and pushed Katarzyna's ideas to the forefront. In a marketing session with her parents, she attempts to determine the company's fate. This case examines the internal family dynamics of Solina as they face a crisis.
