Summary:
The case discusses the pressure Walmart Inc.'s (Walmart) CEO, Doug McMillon, faced to take a stance on the August 2022 antiabortion ruling, when 13 states in the United States banned abortion. Walmart's competitors, such as Kroger and Target, announced their pro-choice commitment by providing employees with financial support to travel out of state for an abortion. However, Walmart did not make any such commitments to employees. When Walmart remained silent on abortion-supportive policies, United for Respect, a nonprofit advocating for retail workers, urged Walmart to implement an abortion-access policy for retail employees. In response, McMillon said that Walmart was working thoughtfully and diligently to explore its best options going forward. Walmart must also ensure the privacy of employees' health data, a general concern that other employers supportive of abortion services also considered. How can McMillon support employees at Walmart? How can he protect the healthcare data of employees? Should McMillon stop funding political parties? The case encourages students to determine a company's stance when its competitors act on social issues. It also helps students understand privacy issues associated when employers provide medical insurance for their employees.
