- Summary:
- Single-use plastic bags cause significant environmental impact due to increased consumer use and deleterious waste in landfills and oceans. Consumer sentiments support environmental efforts by retailers but, at the same time, place several other criteria ahead of sustainability in purchase decisions. This case discusses sustainability efforts by CVS Caremark, the organization's role in the formation of the Consortium to Reinvent the Retail Bag, and the GreenBagTag program, which is focused on addressing the issue of single-use plastic bags. Students will be asked to evaluate single-use plastic bag use and the corporate social responsibility of organizations to drive change in consumer behavior of single-use plastic bags, investigate and evaluate the GreenBagTag incentive program, and make a recommendation about continuance of the program.
