Summary:
In August 2022, a cease-and-desist order was issued to FTX, a cryptocurrency exchange. The company subsequently filed for bankruptcy. In April 2023, Adam Moskowitz, a United States-based lawyer, filed a class action lawsuit under Florida law against three prominent celebrities, Shaquille O'Neal, Tom Brady, and Larry David, and against over a dozen promoters of FTX as well as the companies Voyager Digital Limited and Binance Holding Limited. This case also highlights Taylor Swift, another high-profile celebrity, who had pointedly asked if FTX was selling "unregistered securities" and avoided striking a deal with them. The case provides a good backdrop for discussing the potential due diligence and even damage control measures that all investors, not just celebrities, should undertake.
