- Summary:
- The case is about how Sue Gove, the CEO of U.S.-based Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (BBB), tried to recover from the strategic actions taken by Mark Tritton, BBB's previous CEO. Tritton drew upon his successful turnaround experience at other retail stores in an attempt to save the company from its deteriorating financial performance, but his strategies failed and the performance of BBB kept plummeting. Consequently, BBB terminated Tritton and appointed Gove as CEO in 2022, who spearheaded turnaround management efforts, including the curtailing of the private-label brands business started by Tritton. Gove believed national brands would still like to sell their merchandise, such as home, baby, beauty, and wellness products, through BBB, though it remained to be seen if national brands would prefer to do business with well-performing retailers. This case focuses on what went wrong with Tritton's strategies and considers how strategies that are successful in one context may not work in another. It also questions how a company can regain the trust of vendors. With this discussion, students examine the role of the buyer-supplier relationship in sustaining a business. Although BBB filed for Chapter 11 under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in 2023, lessons can be gleaned from the mighty big box chain's fall from U.S.-retail grace.
