- Summary:
- Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile, the oldest general store in Louisiana, has maintained much of its original appearance since its beginning in 1863. This company's historical significance and rich relationships fostered during a century and a half of tumultuous key events have produced strong ties to the community. This case includes the family's relocation to Natchitoches and early struggles. A third generation of Fredericks now run the business. Much of the information in the case is provided by Luke Frederick, current co-owner of Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile. Opportunities are presented for discussion of business-level strategy and the degree to which resources may contribute to sustainable competitive advantage. Students will be asked to identify the business-level strategy of the store owners, describe the resources that drive this strategy, and present arguments as to whether the firm has a sustainable competitive advantage.
