- Summary:
- The case explains how Brian R. Niccol, Chairman and CEO of California-based Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (Chipotle), turned around the company by introducing better quality control, an innovative menu, and enhanced delivery and pickup options. In 2018, within one year of Niccol joining Chipotle, the company's share price increased by 66%. However, in 2020, the National Consumers League reported that Chipotle's restaurants were understaffed and workers were overworked, resulting in frequent violations of food safety codes. In fact, food violation practices due to understaffing were also the cause of Chipotle's initial crisis in 2015. In 2021, Chipotle workers protested and held strikes at several locations, demanding an increase in pay and improved working conditions. However, Chipotle's financial performance kept improving despite this struggle and unsafe food practices. What did Niccol do differently from the founder and ex-CEO that enticed consumers to return to Chipotle stores? The case encourages students to explore how to turn around a company in crisis. It also helps students evaluate when single-loop learning occurs in organizations, i.e., employees do not share accurate information with top management.
