- Embedding social justice into mixed methods research requires careful consideration of social justice aims applied to the decision making at each step of the process to promote equity, access, equity, fairness, and value. This approach offers a breadth and depth for creating research that can be implemented for social action to address real-world issues. By identifying a social justice framework appropriate to the issues and crafting a social justice lens applicable across all phases of the mixed methods research, researchers address social injustices and fight against the perpetuation of power inequities. As such, embedding social justice into mixed methods affords researchers opportunities to deeply consider commonly accepted research practices and social injustices that are the result of uninterrogated research methods. This how-to guide leads researchers in understanding how to choose a social justice framework to craft and on which apply a social justice lens to embed social justice into the quantitative, qualitative, and integration phases of their research. In this case study, examples from a mixed methods research publication exemplify opportunities for embedding social justice in research as well as additional considerations regarding sampling, strengthening participatory approaches, and using less traditional analysis methods. Application of these approaches and tools can create research that not only investigates social justice issues but also can be used in social justice action.
