Summary:
The current project aimed to understand the connections between LGBTQ+-affirming care education, counseling students' experiences of training, and the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals seeking mental health care in the southeastern United States. Our aim was to identify discrepancies between counselor education preparation and professional application, highlight systemic issues affecting education and application, and inform mental health professionals' preparation for LGBTQ+-affirming care. We used video-conferencing to hold focus groups with counselor educators, counselor education students, and LGBTQ+ community members. During the study, we dealt with an unexpected influx of imposter participants who did not meet study criteria, which could affect the quality of our data and could potentially harm legitimate participants. This case study details our strategies for identifying imposter participants and how we engaged to minimize potential harm.
