Summary:
The way that data is produced on sex, gender, and sexuality is changing. These changes can be beneficial for LGBTI+ people but only if researchers take a considered approach to how they create, understand, and apply data. Here I summarize some potential risks and benefits of data visibility from the point of view of LGBTI+ people in the UK. I begin by outlining feminist criticisms of the notion of objectivity, which sets the stage for why reflexivity is important in all research. The power at play when populations are counted, particularly by governments, is then discussed to highlight the stakes of data visibility. Taking a reflexive and transparent approach to data production and application is then presented as a way to maximize the value of data visibility for LGBTI+ people. This guide ends with key matters of reflection for researchers and key requirements for transparently producing data and putting it in action.
