- Summary:
- This case study discusses how the I drew on Pacific relational ethics and Pacific research methods to explore the mental health and help-seeking experiences of young Pacific men engaged in elite sports. As part of this study, Talanoa was carried out with young Pacific athletes and Pacific coaches, managers, and administrators in Tamaki Makaurau Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. In this case study I discuss some of the learnings I gained from applying Talanoa and a Pacific approach to research in this diasporic setting and emphasize the central importance of Pacific relational principles and taking a decolonial approach when conducting Pacific research, even within diasporic settings where understandings of Indigenous languages and knowledge systems are diverse. Readers will be challenged to reflect on how their own positionality and relational ethics might impact on the research they do and will learn about some of the sensitivities and subjectivities one must consider when carrying out Pacific research, with a particular focus on the diasporic setting of Auckland, New Zealand.
