Summary:
The case study delineates the application of "praxical reasoning" in studying social movements. Praxical reasoning, as a method of qualitative research, can be understood as both a framework to conducting field research and a technique of appreciating and interpreting information. This model requires "being there" in the struggles of the social movements organized by minoritized communities and sectors. To demonstrate the application of this method, I jump off my experience with an alternative educational institution established and sustained by an Indigenous peoples' movement in Mindanao, Philippines. By triangulating the experiences of students, teachers, and myself as a participant of this social movement, I describe the impact of agricultural education in instilling the values of stewardship and organized resistance to defend Indigenous lands from resource dispossession. The participative approach informs readers of the ever-present opportunity of empowering the people and communities we work with in field research. Moreover, the case study promotes politically committed research and its links to social movement organizing-themes that are not so different from the proposal of scholar-activism, where members of the academe and social movements work together toward knowledge production for social justice and democracy.
