Summary:
Photovoice as a research methodology and method offers a means to give and/or amplify voices of marginalized people, groups, and ethnicities (CohenMiller, 2022). As a methodology, photovoice is grounded in emancipatory theory as a framework for conducting research. And as a method, photovoice is a tool used within the methodology, such as to gather and analyze data. This how-to guide presents specific contexts appropriate to both applying Photovoice by exploring possible challenges and also by guiding researchers on how to plan and use the methodology. Each phase of the Photovoice is described, and examples from the authors' research experience are provided so the readers may understand how to transfer the methodological steps to their context while conducting research. The authors offer further reading, web resources, and a multiple-choice quiz to strengthen readers' knowledge of the Photovoice research methodology.
