Summary:
This case study focuses on the use of qualitative interview methodology to understand the socioemotional states of undocumented students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields during the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of a recent research project. The term socioemotional states refers to the emotional changes students undergo as they build relationships or interact with others in their surrounding environments. In this case study, the term undocumented students refers to people from diverse nationalities and ethnicities who reside in the United States without legal residency or citizenship or a permit to work or to individuals who have overstayed their visas to live in the country. Some undocumented students may have relief from deportation or an employment permit due to the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy. This case study discusses the design and utility of qualitative methodology and interviews with structured questionnaires when working with undocumented students. Additionally, this case study discusses nuanced equitable practices (method practicalities) acquired during the pandemic, such as offering flexible qualitative interview meetings and intentional and genuine ways to engage participants, including via and within Zoom. Lastly, this case study reflects on recruitment impracticalities that researchers should keep in mind when designing future studies.
