- Summary:
- This case discusses qualitative research conducted with indigenous communities of the Meseta Purhépecha (Purhépecha Plateau) in Michoacán, Mexico, in 1998-1999. The research sought to explore whether and how 18 months of civic unrest-following contested national elections- remade gender, indigeneity, citizenship, and political authority at the local scale. Given extant critiques of extractive and colonial research methodologies, I initially sought to incorporate participatory action strategies into the research project. My discussion here centers on my decision not to employ a participatory action research (PAR) model, which would have consisted of aligning my research with a regional Purhépechan indigenous movement active at the time. I stepped back, despite supporting their overall politics, due to on-the-ground complexities that made such an alliance problematic. The discussion seeks to provide guidance to graduate students and/or younger scholars with little field experience, helping them consider how they might evaluate the pros and cons of PAR models in relation to their specific research context. I also explore the difference between mundane participatory techniques and full-scale "action research" models.
