Summary:
This dataset is designed for teaching visual frame analysis by providing an example of the analysis of two visual artworks that present commonalities. The artworks analyzed are (1) a painting titled The Broken Dreams by Rocío Caballero and (2) a photograph by Mayra Martell titled Essay on Identity. Both are contemporary pieces by Mexican artists depicting the issue of the murdered and disappeared women of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. By breaking down the visual elements into "levels of analysis," identifying commonalities, and contextualizing interpretations, I show how one can uncover common ideological meaning in images. The dataset file is accompanied by a Teaching Guide and a Student Guide.
