- This case study describes an inclusive research experience guided by human rights principles involving persons with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities. The inclusive research experience took place within the larger project EQUAL, which focused on assessing the implementation of the new Portuguese law on legal capacity. Coresearchers actively participated in eight training/working sessions aimed to introduce basic social research skills and to develop, field test and practice the data collection tools that were to be used in the Focus Groups: e.g., Rivers of Life, Root-Cause Analysis, and Maps of Self-Determination. They also engaged in a Photovoice exercise. These practical tools and activities, created or adopted by the research team, enabled self-expression and helped to bring forward the voices, knowledge, and experiences of the coresearchers. Following these sessions, coresearchers facilitated Focus Groups with other persons with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities and will participate in data analysis and dissemination. Drawing from this experience, we argue that doing inclusive research guided by human rights principles with persons with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities offers much potential but it is also fraught with complexities and challenges. While providing for mutual learning opportunities and richer findings, it requires adequate time and budget, a focus on ensuring accessibility and full inclusion, and flexibility and openness to accommodate specific needs and share control of the research process. Above all, it demands an attitude of reflexivity from academic researchers throughout the process to question their beliefs, judgements, and practices and address the power imbalances in the team.
