- Summary:
- This study interviewed women in a domestic partnership who were combining full-time paid work with raising school-age children. In this case study, I learned the value of reflexive thematic analysis. I demonstrate how I used analytical reflexivity in respect of both study design and data analysis to deepen my understanding of the phenomena I was studying. I use this experience to show that, when used transparently, reflexivity can support us to decolonize our unnoticed positional thinking at the study design and collection phases. Reflexivity allows us to see data as acting on us as researchers (by showing us things previously unnoticed about ourselves). This way we do not only see data as something we must act on (e.g., code). In other words, by being reflexive we see data as material to challenge our assumptions and highlight unnoticed positional thinking so that we decolonize our thinking. Showing interest and curiosity in outlier data or data not fitting emerging theory are two strategies that can be reflexively illuminating and help to establish rigor. Using this approach and being transparent helps to avoid the accusation that the researcher is cherry-picking from, projecting onto, or flattening the data. In other words, being reflexive enabled me to notice moments when my positional researcher assumptions/interpretations at study design and collection phases got revealed during analysis of my data. This enabled me to subject my initial assumptions and interpretations to critique and examination, deepening my analysis. It changed forever the way I conduct and teach research.
