- Summary:
- This case study describes the process-based approach of completing a systematic review of literature related to understanding treatments for trauma symptoms among Indigenous populations seeking treatment for problematic substance use. We describe cultural and ethical considerations and method-based challenges, and discuss our strategy to improve the overall quality of data synthesis throughout this review. By embedding two-eyed seeing and community-based participatory research methods within the systematic review, we were able to supplement traditional review methods by validating retrieved results with subject matter experts within Indigenous-led treatment facilities. This case study shows a realistic example of how community-based research methods were applied in a showcase of one systematic review. It aims to provide researchers with an example of how to embed and extend results of systematic reviews to be more congruent with best practices within Indigenous research and to ultimately improve the scientific and clinical significance of such research approaches.
