- Summary:
- This case study is based on the author's doctoral research on experiences with kava-related practices (KRP). The purpose of the research was to gather participants' experiences with KRP and contribute to the existing body of research on kava by strengthening the female voice and disseminating their experience and understanding of KRP. By doing so, the research would benefit individuals working within Tongan communities by fostering cultural understanding of this traditional practice and identifying the areas in which KRP has evolved.A Tongan-specific methodology was chosen with the intent to authentically capture the nuances of KRP within the diverse cultural structure of Tonga. The selected methodology is founded on Indigenous epistemology, integrating Tongan cultural norms and acknowledging the significance of communal perspectives, oral traditions, and relational aspects. Central to this methodology is a commitment to cultural sensitivity and ethical research practices, manifesting in strict adherence to cultural protocols, culturally contextualized informed consent procedures, and the safeguarding of participants' rights.Through embedding the research process within Tongan cultural frameworks, this study aimed to generate nuanced and contextually relevant findings, thereby contributing to an enhanced and deeper understanding of KRP.
