This guide explores the power relations that exist between North-South research collaborations as a result of colonialism and its embedded attitudes of patriarchy and racism and what this means for how we shift power in research, build more equitable research partnerships, and promote epistemic justice. In this guide we present two approaches to doing research ethically: the narrow versus the decolonial approach. Within the context of development research, we scrutinize research ethics and power relations not only in North-South research relationships but also within research teams and their respective ethics review boards. We explore what this means for knowledge production. This guidance is based on a real-world multicountry development research program, Evidence and Collaboration for Inclusive Development. Coordinated from London, England, the research had all the cards to adopt a "colonial" gaze in which the North would "research" the South. We narrate the journey of the research team to decentralize power in the program and offer an eight-step model toward decolonizing research ethics and building more equitable research partnerships:The Evidence and Collaboration for Inclusive Development case study demonstrates that it is possible to integrate decolonial research approaches into practice at scale. This can be done despite the current research environment, which does not lend itself to shifting power in research.
