Summary:

Rural communities in Sabah, Malaysia face a challenging environment to prevent zoonotic malaria, a mosquito-borne disease caused by a nonhuman simian parasite found in macaques. This case study addresses persistent research gaps by exploring the local community's perspectives on prevention challenges. Utilising a multimethod approach, combining photovoice and in-depth interviews, the study centres on four culturally diverse rural villages in Kudat, Sabah, Malaysia. Trust generated through prestudy engagement with gatekeepers, including community leaders and healthcare workers prior to the study, overcoming linguistic barriers with local translators. Methodological adaptations, prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic and sociocultural considerations, were executed seamlessly. Face-to-face interviews, including photovoice, proved effective amid the pandemic, coupled with safety measures such as wearing masks. The study emphasizes the importance of community engagement in public health research, fostering active participation and community empowerment in rural Kudat. Beyond addressing knowledge gaps, the research contributes to building community trust, facilitating practical approaches, sharing information through various platforms and ultimately, increasing community involvement in escalating the zoonotic malaria control strategy in rural settings.
