Summary:
Patricia loves the Christmas holiday. She truly believes it is the most wonderful time of the year. As a TV reporter, she also enjoys spreading holiday cheer on-air whenever possible. With Christmas right around the corner, as she sits at her desk in the newsroom, she discovers Mayor Randall Woodfin in Birmingham, Alabama, is also having holiday fun via social media. Just two days before Christmas, Patricia feels this is a perfect story for the days leading up to the holiday weekend. However, other reporters note that the real story in Birmingham, as the year comes to a close, is its nearly historic homicide total. Patricia knows the homicide rate is important, but feels that it can wait until after Christmas. As she and the other reporters congregate for their assignment meeting, Patricia feels compelled to find a way to pitch that sharing Christmas spirit can be just as newsworthy as reporting violent crime, an idea which she knows might receive pushback. Students will be asked to analyze the ways in which journalists determine how to seek and report stories with optimal news value for their respective markets.
