Ben Kneppers and his business partners, David Stover and Kevin Ahearn, were at a critical juncture in the growth of their start-up venture, Bureo. They started their company to make their own products from upcycled fishing nets. After investment from a venture capital group, they scaled at a heightened pace, aided by investments in new remanufacturing technology. This enabled them to change their business model from creating their own products to supplying recycled materials to several other companies. While there is ample demand for their material, the core challenge at this stage in their growth is to find novel, used sources of nylon 6 that fulfill their mission of reducing pollution and creating social value, while keeping the company financially viable. This case demonstrates the concept of regenerative innovation and invites students to think creatively about solutions to the material sourcing issue faced by Bureo.
