- Summary:
- This case discusses the firing of Tony Blevins, the vice president of procurement for Apple Inc. (Apple), who was a star performer at the company. In September 2022, Blevins, who was known for his excellent negotiating skills with suppliers, had his employment terminated after he jokingly made a sexist remark to a TikTok interviewer. The remark went viral on TikTok, and within 24 hours Apple asked Blevins to either get the video withdrawn from TikTok or resign. Blevins could not get the video withdrawn, so Apple fired him. While some employees supported Blevins for his sense of humor, others criticized his inappropriate remark. Was Apple appropriate in firing Blevins? Could Apple's financial performance suffer because of firing a key executive? Should leaders pursue a sense of humor? The case encourages students to explore a firm's dilemma in firing a star employee who makes sexist comments outside work. It also helps students to examine the kind of humor in which leaders should indulge.
