- Summary:
- On December 6, 2021, the U.S.-based home ownership firm Better.com stirred controversy by announcing a massive layoff via a three-minute Zoom webinar. Outrage erupted across social media, focusing on communication issues associated with the mode of delivery of this bad news. The CEO apologized by accepting that the form and execution of the communication was not handled in a professional manner. However, the saga of communication failures continued as three more layoffs occurred within the next eight months. The employees felt unsatisfied and even dejected by the announcement. Based on the case dilemma, students will be asked to discuss the significance of delivering bad news, identify the factors that must be considered when planning a bad news message, deliberate on necessary precautions for delivering such news, and the causes of communication failure outlined in the case. Finally, students are asked to suggest alternative ways of delivering bad news.
