- Summary:
- This case discusses the Majerhat Bridge collapse in Kolkata, in the West Bengal state of India, from the perspective of the institutions involved in its maintenance and management. The case analyzes how the accident occurred even though regular general repairs had been frequently undertaken for about eight years prior to the incident and several tenders had been floated for urgent repairs. Furthermore, even with early warnings about the bridge's safety through audits as well as from concerns raised by the public, the accident could not be averted. The case helps students to understand the challenges associated with the maintenance and management of such an infrastructure, ranging from technical problems, institutional barriers, and difficulties in stakeholder management. The case also helps students to understand critical accident theories and the ways to ensure improved safety for infrastructure assets. It also encourages students to explore the institutional challenges associated with infrastructure management and possible solutions for the same.
