Summary:

The state legislature asked the Dean of the University Medical School to testify on its admissions policy. Their concern was the critical shortage of physicians in underserved communities and the small number of Black, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American physicians in the state. Prior to 2006, an affirmative action admissions policy was used. Based on Federal Court rulings and a state constitutional amendment that banned the use of affirmative action, the policy was changed. Last year, 10,000 students applied for admission, 400 were interviewed, and 170 enrolled. Of those 170, 25 were Black, Hispanic/Latino, or Native American. Students must consider legal and ethical issues; constituency concerns and influences; and admissions policy options, and recommend the best course of action to address legislative concerns.
