- This case examines the lives and legacies of three influential individuals from the Tang and Yuan dynasties (618-1368 AD), a time when trade between the Arab world and China flourished along the Silk Road. These influential individuals paved the way for the spread of Islam in China by facilitating communication and cooperation among various parties.Our first example highlights Zhang Qian, a Chinese explorer who opened up the Silk Road. His leadership approach, which combined vision and persistence, paved the way for increased trade and global cooperation. In order to grasp his significance, students will examine primary materials and historical documents. In our second example, we learn about Chinese Admiral Zheng He, a pioneering sailor who opened up trade routes and diplomatic relations between East and Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa. His leadership techniques will be the subject of critical analysis by the students. Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad and a major player in the spread of Islam to China, is the subject of our third example. Students will read primary sources to learn about his empathetic and transformative leadership, which helped to reduce tensions between Arab and Chinese populations.
