- Summary:
- The early days of the Covid-19 vaccine rollout in the United States was messy, resulting in delays and cancelations due to vaccine scheduling software issues, unclear guidance at all levels, and overworked healthcare workers, many of whom resorted to manual scheduling via telephones. For senior citizens, the most vulnerable group, the situation was confusing and dire. For example, many senior citizens, like Ann Mary Price of West Virginia, failed to successfully receive the vaccine successfully after multiple attempts. The challenge of vaccine scheduling software was not isolated to West Virginia but systemic across many U.S. states and healthcare institutions. For example, the Center of Disease Control and Prevention's $44 million systems, the Vaccine Administration Management System, was painfully slow to address debilitating technology issues. How should healthcare professionals respond to these technology emergencies and mitigate them in the future?
