- Summary:
- India is embarking on low-carbon development strategies to reach net-zero emission goals by 2070. India's power generation mix is moving toward renewable energy to access sustainable energy for all under the United Nations' sustainable development goals. Recognising the significant potential of renewable energy in synchronisation with the government's plan to meet the goal of net zero emission, Shiripal Industries Ltd. (hereafter Shiripal) proposes to build a roof-top-solar photovoltaic-based power generation system mainly for captive usage. Shiripal proposes setting up the plant to decrease its variable overhead costs by decreasing utility expenses for noncore activities. Due to low maintenance costs, the company plans to set aside more savings to ensure positive cash flow. However, management is in a quandary about purchasing or generating power. Management must also identify the right mix of financing options to realize optimum financial benefits from the proposed ₹1200 million capital expenditure. This case presents an alternative solution by proposing a sustainable power generation project vis-à-vis the existing purchase practice of Shiripal. The case also discusses the various options available to the company to meet its capital budgets and financing choices to meet stockholder hopes. It discusses an appropriate mix of financing they can arrange. Students will be asked to recommend if the project should move forward. If yes, what is the appropriate mix of financing for the project, the extent of the promoter's contribution, and the possibility of sustainable finance options? Keywords: project financing, business and management, decision making, financial management.
