- Summary:
- Everyone has experienced a "bad boss" at some point in their lifetime. Perhaps this person questioned every decision, neglected their role as a team builder and mentor, or created a toxic work environment that left individuals questioning their future with the organization. This case study follows graduate student, Melanie Kline, who has been working with her mentor to establish an academic center on her university campus. The Center hires a new director whose leadership style creates a workplace environment so hostile that what was once Melanie's dream job has now become unbearable. The case takes place at a university, but the lessons are universal and can be applied to private businesses, government, or education. This case study also raises important questions about the effects of gender inequality and how it can alter the way that women leaders relate to subordinates. Students will identify the qualities that lead to ineffective leadership and anticipate potential consequences. Students must then create a plan of action and advise Melanie to either confront her new boss or quit.
