Summary:
The case describes how apparel retailer Inditex faced a revenue decline beginning in 2016. It puts the students in the shoes of CEO Pablo Isla in a particular moment in 2018, when he was about to announce that the company planned to enlarge its online channel, aiming to sell in all of the world's markets by 2020. The case then fictionalises Isla's thought process as he considers the additional alternatives he could develop to ensure growth. It encourages students to analyse, criticise, and expand these alternatives, which are: 1) New brands and new products for current customer segments; 2) New segments; 3) New channels; 4) New markets; and 5) A new design-and-fabrication online social network. The student is also asked to deliberate on how these alternatives could be easily implemented, how they would affect Inditex's culture, and whether the company has the resources and capabilities to develop them. To propose an appropriate solution to the presented dilemma, students will have to use concepts from operations, marketing and strategy, such as vertical supply chain, inventory management, capital-intensive, labour-intensive activities, in-house manufacturing, bullwhip effect, lean management, activity map, economies of scale, economies of scope, outsourcing, advertising, Five Forces, growth, operational efficiency, innovation, platforms, network effect, and resources and capabilities.
