Summary:
This case utilizes complex production cost data to present students with a real-world example of conducting a performance evaluation. It shows the importance of using a flexible budget in variance analyses and in making bonus decisions. It also presents challenging accounting-related ethical and human-relation issues that accountants often experience and need to resolve in their jobs. Finally, the case shows the benefits of using an interactive data visualization (IDV) software such as Tableau. Although Excel is commonly used by accountants, its ability to present complex data in a meaningful, easy to understand, and attractive visualization is limited in some areas. Many decision makers in organizations are not comfortable with complex calculations. As information providers, accountants have the responsibility to provide meaningful information to decision makers in formats that are simple, understandable, and useful, making effective IDV critical.
