Summary:
A new job as a manager is difficult enough without vulnerabilities that complicate relationships with employees. This is the situation in which Jeremiah found himself. He was a recent college graduate who had accepted a job as an area manager at a tire company. The problems were his age (23), experience, and an upper-level relative. The employees regarded Jeremiah as too young, unqualified, and the recipient of nepotism. He realized these deficits and had to overcome each of them in order to be successful. The solution Jeremiah stumbled upon was the therapeutic use of humor. Humor helps to elevate the reputation of a manager as competent and to build trust within the workplace. This approach enabled Jeremiah to transcend what otherwise could have defeated him in the new job. Students will be asked to apply their knowledge of effective management strategies to determine whether Jeremiah utilized the best pathway to establish a connection with an unfamiliar workforce.
